“New Age” was a spiritual movement born from the counterculture of the 1960’s, when people grew tired of the systemized oppression of long-standing societal beliefs, rules, and religions.
They craved meaningful connection and wanted to gain a greater understanding of their life’s meaning. And so, they turned within and looked for ways to explore themselves without the structure or judgement of religion. And it embodied a vast world of traditions. Tarot. Astrology. Wicca. Crystals. Magic.
All of these had long been deemed pagan or occult, and most of them were practiced by women, indigenous peoples, people of color, and queer folks. So, it’s no surprise that these traditions were largely ridiculed by the patriarchal mentality of mainstream culture.
But for those who chose to enter through the door of this rich, mysterious world, they found more than they could’ve ever imagined was possible.
